Diabetes University 2010 Program Overview:

In 2010, this program is traveling to Charleston to serve the citizens of the Low Country.  Due to the unprecedented need for diabetes education in our state, we are partnering with the City of Charleston, the Charleston County Community Education Program and our keynote speaker Dr. Ann Kulze to promote it with them.  We will have a free advertisement in the Spring/Summer Program and Class Course Directory that will go out to 20,000 homes in March.  We are planning Diabetes University for Saturday, July 17th so mark your calendars now.  For futher information on our keynote speaker, please visit her website at:

This program will be held at Burke High School Auditorium located in downtown Charleston next to the Citadel.  It will begin at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 2:15 p.m. It will support community education for approximately 400 South Carolina citizens in the Charleston area. Community members living with diabetes will be the focus for the education program. The program will provide materials educating community members about Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and four live educational sessions on health prevention offered by local community healthcare leaders and educators. The four educational sessions will address the following topics: Living with Diabetes (general interactive overview of diabetes mellitus); Obesity, Heart Disease, Complications of Diabetes, Nutrition, Smoking Cessation and Exercises to help with Diabetes & Heart Health are all topics we plan to include in this line up.  We also plan to have some free screenings available – screenings being considered now are a lipid screening and BMI assessment as well as others.
