Asthma
In the spring of 2004, SCAHP, with support from the Environmental Protection Act, partnered with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to provide asthma education to childcare providers and parents, in both Richland and Orangeburg counties. SCAHP's disease management consultant, Laura Szadek, RN, MSN, CPNP, developed and implemented an asthma education course geared toward childcare providers and parents in the childcare setting. More than 130 childcare providers received training at six training seminars, including one at a homeless shelter. Following the training, multiple childcare centers reported making changes to their centers to provide better care for their enrollees with asthma. Szadek continues to provide asthma management education across the state of South Carolina on a request basis.
SCAHP also provided asthma education to school nurses at the annual SC DHEC School Nurse Conference. A session on asthma, allergy and anaphylaxis updates specific to school nurses was provided.
Currently SCAHP partners with the Schering Corporation on www.schoolasthmaallergy.com, a website dedicated to educating parents, teachers and caregivers on how to manage asthma and allergies in children.
